The 10 Commandments are important guidelines that help us live lives pleasing to God. What’s more, they lead us to treat others with kindness and respect. But how do we explain these in a way that’s simple enough for kids to understand? Let’s break them down:

  1. One God. God is the most important person in our lives.
  2. No Idols. Worship God only.
  3. Watch Your Words We should respectfully speak about God.
  4. Rest on the Sabbath Day. Take time to rest and spend time with God on the Sabbath Day.
  5. Honor Your Father and Mother. Obey your parents and respect them.
  6. Do Not Murder. Treat others with kindness and never hurt anyone.
  7. One Man, One Woman. Keep your wedding promises.
  8. Do Not Steal. Don’t take what’s not yours.
  9. Do Not Lie. Always be truthful and honest.
  10. Don’t Covet. Be happy with what you have and don’t envy others.

This simple version of the Ten Commandments for kids will help them understand the core message of each Commandment.

This will help them visualize the Commandments while actively participating in the lesson. Each puppet represents one of the 10 Commandments. Here’s how you can get started:

Download the 10 Commandments Puppets Printable. You can easily find this printable at the end of this post. Print it out on cardstock and you’re ready to begin!

Color the Puppets. Let your kids get creative by coloring each of the puppets in bright and fun colors. This activity not only helps them focus but also allows them to connect with each Commandment visually.

Cut out the Puppets. After coloring, carefully cut out each puppet. Younger kids can use scissors, with your supervision, to ensure they get the cutting just right.

Attach to Craft Sticks. Adhere the puppets to craft sticks with glue sticks or glue dots. You now have a full set of 10 Commandments puppets ready for play!

Use the Puppets to Teach. Hold up each puppet one by one, as you teach your kids about the 10 Commandments. As you hold up each puppet, briefly discuss what it means. A Simple 10 Commandments Lesson Plan for Kids

Now that you’ve got your puppets ready, let’s dive into a simple, structured lesson plan for how to teach the 10 Commandments in a fun way. The 10 Commandments lesson plan below can be adapted to fit your child’s age and attention span.

End the lesson with a short prayer asking God for help in following His Commandments. Encourage the kids to pray out loud as well, thanking God for guiding them to live a life that honors God.
