10 Commandments Simple Version for Preschool Kids

One of the reasons that parents and teachers tend to shy away from teaching the 10 Commandments is that some of God’s rules can be difficult to explain to little ones. In addition, if you’re anything like me, you can be fearful of the questions little ones may ask. And we all know kids can come up with some interesting questions!

When teaching my children about Bible topics that pertain to more mature content, my rule is that I try to answer their questions with just enough information to satisfy their curiosity. For example, if my young child were to ask me what it means to “not murder” I would explain that it means that God tells us not to hurt others. If the conversation ends there, great. If not, I’ll use the opportunity to talk with my child and dig deeper into God’s Truth with them. I must trust that He will give me the perfect words to share with my children.

To help you navigate teaching preschool children the 10 Commandments, I’ve included a simple list of Commandments translated for preschool kids:

  1. One God – Put God First
  2. No Idols – Worship God Only
  3. Watch Your Words – Use God’s Name Respectfully
  4. Rest on the Sabbath – Spend Time With God and Don’t Work
  5. Honor Your Father and Mother – Respect Your Parents
  6. Do Not Hurt Others – Harm No One
  7. One Man, One Woman – Keep Wedding Promises
  8. Do Not Steal – Don’t Take What Is Not Yours
  9. Do Not Lie – Tell the Truth
  10. Do Not Covet – Be Happy With What You Have

My kids love this version of the 10 Commandments and can recite them all without hesitation because they are easy to remember. What a wonderful thing it is for our children to hide God’s Word in their hearts!

10 Commandments Free Printable: Love God, Love People

At the bottom of the printable’s round portion, you will notice the phrases “Love God” and “Love People.” Each of the 10 Commandments falls under one of these two categories. Commandments 1-4 have to do with how we love God. First, we acknowledge that He is the One True God. Next, we strive to have no other idols because He comes first. We are careful to “watch our words” because God wants us to respect His Name with our speech. Resting on the Sabbath Day every week is a wonderful reminder of God’s goodness and helps us have a close relationship with Him.

Commandments 5-10 have to do with how we love people. We should respect our parents, avoid hurting others, keep our wedding promises, and not take what does not belong to us. Finally, we should tell the truth and not want what others have. We are truly loving God and others when we keep the 10 Commandments!

10 Commandments Craft for Preschoolers: FREE Activity for Kids

This easy 10 Commandments craft for preschoolers provides kids with a visual reminder of God’s Rules. In addition, the free printable only requires a bit of coloring, cutting, and gluing. Of course, you can tailor your involvement in the process to your child’s unique strengths. Some children are coloring experts but need a little help with their scissors skills. How much you, as the parent or teacher, decide to help is up to you. Here are the supplies you will need for this project:

  • kid or adult scissors (depending on who is doing the cutting)
  • a glue stick
  • crayons, markers, or colored pencils
  • yarn in the color of your choice
  • a hole punch
  • cardstock

To get started with this fun 10 Commandments activity, print the PDF found at the bottom of this post onto cardstock. If you don’t have any cardstock, you could print the free printable onto computer paper and mount it onto construction paper. However, cardstock will provide you with a sturdier result. Next, have your child color the printable with his or her favorite colors.

After the printable has been colored, it is time to cut out the pieces in preparation for assembly. Cut out the large round portion along the solid line. Next, you will cut out the 10 Commandments tablets. When cutting out the tablets, be mindful that they should not be cut apart as they will be folded down the middle with a piece of yarn sandwiched in the center. Punch holes in the three designated locations. Finally, cut three pieces of yarn in the following measurements:

  • 1 18″ piece for the hanger
  • 1 22″ piece for Commandments 1-4
  • 1 26″ piece for Commandments 5-10

Now that your printable is colored and cut apart, you are ready to assemble! First, thread the 18″ piece of yarn through the holes in the top of the round portion of the printable. Tie the yarn in a knot to create a hanger. ten commandments for preschoolers printable

Fold the 10 Commandments tablets down the middle. Place Commandments 1-4 on the left side of the round printable and Commandments 5-10 on the right side. The first four Commandments will fall under the “Love God” category and Commandments 5-10 under the “Love People” category. Once you are happy with your layout, you are ready to attach the other two pieces of yarn to the round portion of the printable.

Next, thread the 22″ piece of yarn through the hole on the left side of the printable. The 26″ piece should be threaded through the hole on the right side. The yarn pieces are different measurements because each piece will hold a different number of 10 Commandments tablets (4 on the left, 6 on the right).

Starting at the bottom of the yarn and working up, use a glue stick to cover the right inside of each tablet. Place the yarn in the center and press the tablet together to sandwich the yarn inside. There’s no need for perfection. Use your best “eyeball skills” to space the tablets evenly along the length of the yarn.

Use this cute hanging wall art craft as a tool to help your child learn and remember God’s rules for loving Him and the people He created.

10 Commandments FREE Printable Helpful Tips

I designed this 10 Commandments craft for preschoolers to be easy and simple. However, there are ways in which you can prepare this craft to make things run a bit smoother. These tips will be especially helpful if you are a teacher and will be working on this project with a classroom full of kiddos. First, if the children with whom you are working struggle with their scissors skills, I recommend cutting out the pieces beforehand. Preparing the cut pieces of paper will help to streamline the crafting process and save time and frustration.

One of the best ways I have found to make a crafting experience easier with lots of littles is to create craft kits. Place all the materials needed to create the craft inside a disposable sandwich bag. This makes the materials easy to distribute and access. Position glue sticks and crayons on the table to make supplies easy for little hands to grab. When you get ready to assemble this craft, I suggest working with small groups of kids at a time while the other group(s) of children complete a different task. In addition, ask other adults to help you with this project. These are just a few simple ways to keep things rocking along!

Whether you are working with your child at your dining room table or with a group of little kids in a classroom setting, this 10 Commandments craft for preschoolers is sure to be lots of fun! I pray this project blesses you and the children in your care!
