The Feast of First Fruits is definitely worth celebrating as it is a time to be filled with joy about the resurrection of the risen Messiah! This First Fruits activity for kids is fun, tasty, and meaningful. This recipe will help you share with your children the wonderful story of how Yeshua overcame death and offered us the wonderful gift of salvation and freedom!

Resurrection Empty Tomb Craft and Recipe for Kids

This Resurrection Empty tomb craft and recipe for kids is part recipe, part craft. That’s because it involves molding and shaping healthy and tasty ingredients into the shape of an empty tomb. Basically, you’re telling your kids to play with their food! And that’s exactly why your kids will have a blast with this activity. What kid doesn’t like being up to their elbows in peanut butter and chocolate chips? I mean, I can’t say that I’d be mad about that scenario myself.

This recipe includes healthy, nutritious ingredients that are void of processed sugars. Pure maple syrup gives the recipe its sweetness, and stevia-sweetened chocolate chips allow us to sidestep white sugar. As a side note, this recipe is not suitable for anyone who has a peanut allergy as one of its main ingredients is peanut butter. Granted that natural, no-sugar-added almond butter is not an allergy issue for you or your child, feel free to use it as a substitute. Empty Tomb Activity: How to Teach Kids About the Resurrection

When teaching kids about the resurrection, it is important that we, as parents, relay the life-changing story in a way that is engaging and memorable. Telling the miraculous story of the risen Messiah doesn’t need to be complicated. As a former preschool teacher, I am a firm believer in the concept that simple is best when it comes to teaching kids. This resurrection empty tomb craft and recipe is an engaging, hands-on way to tell your children about the greatest story ever told.

Resurrection Day Recipe for Kids: A First Fruits Activity

My 3-year-old daughter loved making this empty tomb craft. The most difficult part about the project was keeping her from eating her creation before it was time! In addition to the ingredients listed below, you will need a large mixing bowl and a pizza pan or large plate (I used a pizza pan). If you are hoping to display your project you may choose to transfer the finished tomb to a pretty plate when you are finished.

This Resurrection Empty tomb craft and recipe for kids is a snap to make.  It’s the perfect activity for children because it doesn’t require baking or cooking and it’s super simple. Let younger kids get involved by adding the ingredients to the bowl and stirring them together. Older kids can read, measure, and combine the ingredients themselves.

Resurrection Day Empty Tomb Recipe and Craft Ingredients

Here are the ingredients you will need for this recipe. Feel free to make substitutions to accommodate any specific dietary needs you or your children may have. Just know that I have not tested this recipe with ingredients other than the ones below.

1 Cup Old-Fashioned Rolled Oats

1/2 Cup Natural Peanut Butter (No Sugar Added)

1/4 Cup Pure Maple Syrup

1/4 Stevia-Sweetened Chocolate Chips (We used the “Bake Believe” brand and a combination of white and dark chocolate chips)

1 Teaspoon Almond Extract (Vanilla Works Too!)

1/8 Teaspoon Pink Salt

How To Make An Empty Tomb Craft for First Fruits

In order to make this empty tomb craft, begin by combining all of the ingredients into a large bowl. You can stir them together with a spatula, but you may find that clean hands do a better job of mixing everything together. After the ingredients are combined, place the bowl in the refrigerator for 5 – 10 minutes in order to allow the mixture to “set up.” Otherwise, the mixture will be too wet to work with.

After the mixture has had a chance to firm up, remove it from the bowl and divide it into two parts. I used a well-loved pizza pan to keep the mess contained. The smaller portion of the mixture should be about the size of a golf ball. This will serve as the stone that sits in front of the tomb opening. The larger portion of the mixture will create an empty tomb.

Making the DIY Empty Tomb Craft

Now the fun begins! Instruct your kids to shape the divided mixture into a large ball and a smaller one. Basically, think of this recipe as the best-tasting playdough on the planet! Next, instruct your child to create a “door” in the large ball with their fingers to form the “tomb.”

Finally, have your child place the “stone” in front of the entrance of the tomb. The project is now complete! This is a great time to begin explaining the story of how Yeshua was placed in the tomb and rose again after three days and three nights. One of my favorite resources to teach my children about the resurrection, and other Bible stories, is “The Complete Illustrated Children’s Bible.” I feel that it is mostly accurate and does a great job of explaining stories that are sometimes difficult to teach children. After your child is done creating his or her empty tomb and you’ve shared the story of Yeshua’s resurrection, feel free to eat the fruits of your labor! Your child can form the mixture into balls or press it into an 8 x 8 pan to create squares. Either way, be sure to refrigerate the mixture so that it holds its shape. The mixture should keep for up to 3 or 4 days in the refrigerator–if it lasts that long!
