Teaching your children about the Ten Commandments can be fun! As a busy mom of littles, I’m always looking for hands-on ideas for sharing God’s Truth with my kids. The great thing about teaching kids about the Ten Commandments, or any other Bible concept, is that simple is always better. First, simple activities don’t overwhelm kids. . . or you! In addition, busy mamas like us are much more likely to implement learning activities when they are simple and use easily accessible supplies.

All you need for this easy Ten Commandments activity is your computer, a printer, computer paper, and your favorite pair of scissors. Simply print the free printable Bible game by clicking the link at the bottom of this post. Feel free to be precise when cutting out the stone tablets, but let me let you in on a secret: cutting loosely around the tablets and leaving some white margin will save you a lot of time and sanity! If you’d like to save this activity to use in the future, you can print the tablets on cardstock and laminate the pieces to make them last longer.

10 Commandments Activity for Kids

I have a confession: It wasn’t until several years ago when I was teaching my toddler about the Ten Commandments that I actually learned them in order myself. Before then, I would have blushed five shades of red and stumbled over my words if someone had asked me to tell them any one of the Commandments and its corresponding number. Tell me I’m not alone here! Teaching little ones certainly has a way of humbling you!

The great news is that teaching a concept to another person is one of the best ways to learn it yourself! I can now say that I am able to recall each of the Ten Commandments in order, thanks to my toddler! And you can be sure that she will correct me if I get one wrong! Activities such as my Ten Commandments Scavenger Hunt or this 10 Commandments Printable Match Game are great hands-on learning games to help children learn about Bible Truths.

10 Commandments Matching Game for Children: How to Prepare

Preparing for this fun Bible activity is easy–just the way we like it! Simply click the link at the end of this post and print the PDF. Next, you will need to cut out the “stone tablets” in order to play the game. The quickest way to cut out the game pieces is to stack the papers on top of each other and cut out as many as you can at once. This is a hack that I learned from my days of teaching preschool. Let me tell you, it saves a lot of time!

Depending on the paper that you use to print your game pieces, you may find that the numbers and Commandments show through the back side. Of course, this takes away from the mystery of the game! If you find this is the case, a simple remedy is to use a glue stick to mount the pieces onto a piece of construction paper before cutting them out.

Activity for the Ten Commandments: How to Play

Here’s how to play this fun game: One set of the stone tablets that you will print displays the numbers 1 – 10, which represents each Commandment. The other set of tablets shows the actual Commandments, such as “One God,” “No Idols,”, etc. Finally, an answer key is provided in the printable–not that you need it. Wink, wink. As I previously stated, there is no need to be precise when cutting out the tablets. Done is better than perfect. If you would like to laminate the game pieces, now is the time. If not, you are ready to play!

Begin by shuffling the tablet pieces. Next, place each tablet piece face down on a table. Have each player take a turn turning over two cards. The goal is to match a number card with the corresponding Commandment. For example, the “number 1” tablet and the “One God” tablet would be a match. If a match is made, the player gets another turn. If not, the player turns the tablets back over in their original locations and the next player gets a turn. Whoever gets the most matches wins!

Of course, feel free to put your own spin on this game. There are no hard and fast rules here. The most important goal is for our kids to have fun learning the Ten Commandments. You could hold the number tablets in your hand and place the Commandment tablets face up on a table. Have the child draw a number card from your hand and match it to the correct Commandment. Or, tape the Commandments to a wall with painter’s tape and invite your child to tape the corresponding number tablet next to the correct Commandment. The possibilities are endless!

10 Commandments Matching Game for Kids of All Ages

This Ten Commandments activity can work for kids of all ages. Simply modify it to fit the learning level of your child. For example, I have two young children, one of who is learning to read. My kids were able to recognize the numbers as they turned over the game pieces, but reading the Commandments was a little more difficult. My emerging reader enjoyed sounding out some of the words and trying to figure out what each Commandment read. I facilitated the game, which gave me an opportunity to review the Ten Commandments with the kids. In addition, we got the added bonus of working on reading skills! Boom!

Older kids will be able to play this game on their own with no trouble. Depending on their knowledge of the Ten Commandments, you can choose whether to facilitate the game. While children who are proficient in reading can certainly play this game independently, parents who play along with them will have opportunities for meaningful conversation as you discuss the Commandments.

10 Commandments Concentration Game for Children

One of my favorite childhood games was concentration, also known as the matching game. I loved challenging my memory and trying to remember exactly where each card was in order to make a match. That’s why I thought combining teaching kids about the 10 Commandments with the matching game would be fun and effective. As a former preschool teacher, I love teaching my own children with a hands-on approach to learning.

Mamas, we have such an amazing calling to teach our children about God’s Truth. This 10 Commandments printable match game is just one simple way to share God’s Word with our kids. I pray that this Bible activity is fun and engaging for your children. In addition, it is my heart’s desire that it helps your children hide God’s Word in their hearts. I know that you are a mama who seeks to lead her children in His paths of righteousness. Otherwise, you wouldn’t be here looking for ways to teach the Ten Commandments to your kids. May the Father richly bless you and your family!
