Fruit of the Spirit Craft for Kids

Galatians 5:22-23 states that “the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.” But how do we explain this Truth to children in a way they can understand? First, we can give examples to help them know how to show others the Fruit of the Spirit. For example, sharing toys or helping a friend is a way to show love to others. In addition, it is important to explain where the Fruit of the Spirit comes from. We don’t buy it from the grocery store and it doesn’t grow on trees! The Fruit of the Spirit comes from God alone.

How to Teach Kids God’s Truth

As Mamas, we want to teach our children about God and the love He has for our children. One of the best ways we can do that is by teaching our children about the Fruit of the Spirit. That’s because The Fruit is a special gift God gives His children when we choose to walk in His ways. And we know God gives good gifts to those He loves (James 1:17)!

Some Truths found in God’s Word, such as the Fruit of the Spirit, can be challenging to teach young children because it can be difficult to explain in simple terms. For example, topics such as the Ten Commandments or the Ten Plagues of Egypt can be hard to discuss with little kids because of the subject matter and since children are experts at asking questions that stump us! Teaching children about certain Bible topics can be daunting, but the good news is that we can trust God to equip us to do the job He has called us to. Next, you or your child should cut out the pieces. First, cut out the basket along the solid lines. Then cut out the Fruit of the Spirit circles along the dotted lines. After the pieces have been cut out, you are ready to assemble the craft. Next, use a hole punch to make a hole in the designated locations. Or, if you are like me, you can’t find your hole punch and you have to use the pointy end of your scissors to make the holes instead.

Then have your child glue the Fruit of the Spirit circles in the fruit basket. The circles will overlap, but it is best if the words printed on the circles are visible. That way, you and your child can easily refer to the craft project to practice learning the Fruit of the Spirit.

Help your child arrange the Fruit of the Spirit circles on the basket. Once you are happy with the layout, have your child glue the Fruit of the Spirit circles in the basket. The circles will overlap, and it is best if the words printed on the circles are visible. That way, you and your child can easily refer to the craft project to practice learning the Fruit of the Spirit. After the glued pieces have dried, thread the piece of yarn or twine through the holes and tie in a knot at each end to create a hanger for the basket.

Once your child has glued the circle pieces onto the basket and the hanger has been attached, they are finished with the craft! It is that simple. Next comes the important part: helping your child find the perfect spot to hang their new creation! Your child will love displaying their work of art and you will love that they have a visual tool to help them remember the Fruit of the Spirit. It’s a win-win!

Refer to your child’s Fruit of the Spirit craft as a jumping-off point for meaningful discussion. For example, point to one of the circles and ask them which Fruit it is and what it means to have that particular Fruit. Next, have them give you a practical way in which they can show that Fruit to God and others. We can show gentleness by carefully petting a dog. Peace can be cultivated in our homes when we make things right when we have disagreements with family members. Practical examples of how we can exhibit the Fruit of the Spirit are endless!

Tips For Completing This Fruit of the Spirit Craft With a Group of Kids

While this Fruit of the Spirit craft is designed to be simple, attempting to complete it with a group of children can be challenging. If you are a teacher leading a group of children in this project, I have a few suggestions to help things run smoothly. First, if the children you teach are very young, I suggest you cut out the pieces beforehand. This can save time and frustration. Place the paper cutouts in plastic zip-top bags for easy distribution. In addition, recruit a friend or two to help you with the craft. Extra grown-up hands can make things a lot easier!
