Exodus 20 gives us God’s instruction for how we are to live. As mamas, we know the importance of teaching our children about the 10 Commandments. However, this can be a daunting task. This is especially true when we attempt to teach our kids about tricky topics. I created this Ten Commandments coloring page pack to help you train your children in God’s Truth. This free printable color sheet pack includes 3 unique pages designed to help your child learn and grow in his or her faith.
When you use these 10 Commandments coloring pages, take the opportunity to discuss God’s Rules with your child. Ask open-ended questions to encourage meaningful conversation. You could ask questions like:
Why did God give Moses the 10 Commandments?
Should we follow the 10 Commandments?
How do the 10 Commandments help us love God?
How do they help us love others?
What happens if we don’t follow God’s Rules?
Next, go through each of the 10 Commandments together and ask specific questions about each one. For example:
What does it mean to rest on the Sabbath Day?
How can you honor your father and mother?
What does it mean to misuse God’s Name?

Teaching Kids About the 10 Commandments
When I talk to my kids about the 10 Commandments, I explain that God gives us His special Rules because He loves us so much. God wants us to live in His blessing. And if we choose to follow Him we must obey His Laws. Most people think that following rules means that they can’t have fun. However, God’s Rules are boundaries that provide protection, blessing, and direction. And we can have lots of fun when we live within those boundaries!
I teach my kids that God loves us, which is why He gives us Rules for how we should live. For example, when we choose to rest on the Sabbath Day our bodies have a chance to rest and our hearts have time to spend with Him. When we tell the truth we can be found trustworthy by others. And when we choose to be happy with what we have and not covet, our minds are not consumed with wanting more and more stuff. When we choose not to hurt others it keeps us all safe from harm and serves as a testament of God’s love in us. Following God’s Commandments produces a life of blessing!
How to Explain the 10 Commandments to Kids
Teaching the 10 Commandments to kids can be awkward. That is because some of the Commandments deal with topics we aren’t sure how to explain to little ones. For example, trying to explain adultery and murder to kids can open the door to questions we may not have answers for. Fortunately, these specific Commandments are ones that children will hopefully not be confronted with for a long time. Therefore, as parents, there is no need to go into great detail about Bible topics that are difficult to explain.
My rule of thumb when discussing tricky topics with my children is to give just enough information to satisfy their curiosity. For example, instead of describing adultery to my young children, I make clear the importance of keeping wedding promises. If my child continues to ask questions, I provide bits of information until their questions are answered. Most importantly, ask God to give you the words you should speak to your children. He will provide!

Free Printable 10 Commandments Color Sheet
You must only gather a few supplies to complete this coloring sheet project. Depending on preference, your child will need crayons, markers, or colored pencils. If you are feeling adventurous, you may offer your child watercolors to add color to the coloring sheet. If so, printing on cardstock will be your best bet for avoiding a soggy result.

While you can certainly use these Ten Commandments coloring sheets as they are, a few additional craft supplies can elevate your child’s coloring experience. For example, mounting your child’s artwork on construction paper will make it sturdier and extra-special for display. In addition, your child could cut out the images from the color sheets and mount them on colorful paper. Next, punch a hole in the top of the cutouts, thread yarn through the hole, and tie it in a knot to create fun hanging art. Providing your child with various craft supplies can allow his or her creativity to run wild!
