Good Samaritan Activity: How to Prepare for the Game

This “Do You Love Your Neighbor Game” can be played with a minimum of 2 children or a group of kids. The rules of the game change slightly depending on how many players are participating.

Here are the supplies you will need for the Good Samaritan activity if playing with 2 or 3 children:

  • 1 roll of toilet paper (I suggest using cheap toilet paper, not the good stuff!)
  • Scissors
  • 7 game piece cutouts (1 printed page found at the bottom of this post)
  • 8″ – 12″ piece of masking or painter’s tape
  • 1  2″ piece of tape per game piece

Here are the supplies you will need for the Good Samaritan activity if playing with a group of 4 or more children:

  • 2 rolls of toilet paper (1 per team. I suggest using cheap toilet paper, not the good stuff!)
  • Scissors
  • 1 game piece cutout per player
  • 2  8″ – 12″ pieces of masking or painter’s tape

Good Samaritan Game: Getting Ready to Play

First, scroll to the bottom of this post and click the button to print the game pieces. You will use these pieces to teach the story of the Good Samaritan. In addition, you will use them to play the “Do You Love Your Neighbor Game.” Next, cut out each game piece. I like to leave a small white border around the pieces because it is easy and fast. No need for perfection when cutting out the pieces! Then, place an approximately 2″ piece of tape, rolled into a loop, on the back of each game piece.

Luke 10:25 tells the account of the Good Samaritan and how he showed compassion to a man who had been robbed and beaten. After being passed over by a Priest and Levite, a kind Samaritan man saw the injured man’s need and provided him with different kinds of help. You will use the game piece cutouts to teach about the types of help shown to the injured man. Open your Bible and read the story of the Good Samaritan to your child or group of children. Next, discuss the following ways the Good Samaritan provided help to the injured man.

Do You Love Your Neighbor Game: Different Kinds of Help

Hold up each corresponding game piece to serve as a visual aid as you teach your child(ren) about the different kinds of help provided by the Good Samaritan.

Compassion

Compassion means to have pity and concern for the sufferings of others and the desire to help them. The Good Samaritan saw the injured man and had compassion. He knew he must stop and help.

Immediate Care

The Good Samaritan didn’t just feel bad for the injured man and go on his way. He stopped and tended to the man’s wounds. He cleaned and bandaged them to prevent further injury or infection.

Transportation

The Good Samaritan lifted the injured man onto his donkey and took him to a safe place.

Shelter

The Samaritan took the injured man to an inn where he could rest and heal.

Comfort

After they arrived at the inn, the Good Samaritan continued to care for the injured man throughout the night.

Money

The next day, the Samaritan gave money to the innkeeper to cover expenses.

Ongoing Care

Finally, the Good Samaritan asked the innkeeper to look after the injured man and promised to reimburse him for any additional expenses until he recovered.

These acts of kindness and generosity demonstrated the Samaritan’s compassion and willingness to help someone in need, regardless of any differences or societal barriers.

Good Samaritan Story Activity: Game Rules

How to play the “Do You Love Your Neighbor Game” with 2 or 3 children:

Place the 8″ – 12″ piece of tape on the floor in an area with enough room for a relay race. Choose a child or ask for a volunteer to pretend to be the injured man. Set a timer and have the other child(ren) “bandage” the “injured man’s” wounds by wrapping his head, torso, arms, and legs with toilet paper. The child(ren) must use the entire roll of toilet paper for this task to be complete. Instruct the child(ren) to allow the eyes, nose, and mouth of the “injured man” to remain uncovered.

After the “injured man” has been “bandaged” with the entire roll of toilet paper, the child(ren) should run back to the tape starting line. Next, the child(ren) should take one game piece at a time, run to the injured man, and stick the game piece on his/her body. If 3 children are playing the game, the 2 attaching the game pieces to the “injured man” should take turns. Then they should repeat this process until all the game pieces have been attached to the “injured man.” The game’s object is to “bandage” the injured man and attach the game pieces to him as quickly as possible!

Parable of the Good Samaritan Activities: More Game Rules

How to play the “Do You Love Your Neighbor Game” with 4 or more children:

Place 2  8″ – 12″ pieces of tape on the floor in an area with enough room for a relay race. Divide the group of children into 2 teams. If working with a group of children of various ages, I suggest dividing them so the groups are balanced in age. Choose, per team, a child or ask for a volunteer to pretend to be the injured man. Have each team stand in a group around their “injured man.” On your “go,” they should “bandage” the “injured man” with the entire roll of toilet paper. Instruct the child(ren) to allow the eyes, nose, and mouth of the “injured man” to remain uncovered. Whichever team completes this task first wins the first part of the game.

Once the “injured man” has been “bandaged,” the children should line up behind the tape to begin the second part of the game. Give each child a game piece with a loop of tape attached to the back. If you have an odd number of children on a team, give one child an extra game piece to make things fair. On your “go” the 2 teams of children will run to their “injured man,” one at a time, and attach their game piece to his/her body. The first team to attach all their game pieces to their “injured man” wins.
