bible verses about worry and stress for moms anxiety bible verses

Moms commonly deal with anxious feelings. Fortunately, there are lots of Bible verses about worry and stress for anxious moms. In this article, I’ll share with you the powerful Truths found in God’s Word that will allow you to overcome anxiety and live in freedom. Finding victory over mom anxiety and worry takes work and practice, but it is worth it.

How to Overcome Mom Worry

If you’re a mama, you’ve experienced anxiety at some point. It’s easy to worry about the little people that God has entrusted us with. Many people consider worry to be part of a mom’s job description. But can I let you in a little secret? Even though worry and anxiety often creep their way into your mama heart and mind, we are actually commanded not to worry.

Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life? –Matthew 6:25-27

Wait just a minute? Me, a mom. . . not worry? Seriously? How do I not worry that my baby will never sleep through the night? Please tell me how I’m supposed to stop worrying that my preschooler won’t make friends. And how do I turn down the anxiety that is playing on a loop inside my brain when my teenager is acting in rebellion? The great news is that the Scriptures don’t just tell us not to worry and stress–they also tell us how to calm our hearts and minds.

Mom Anxiety Bible Verses

As mamas, one of our greatest weapons in fighting worry and anxiety is Scripture. Even though God has blessed us with exactly what we need to walk in freedom from the burden of worry and stress, I often find myself looking for other solutions to calm my anxious heart. I Google the best anxiety-fighting supplements. My mind is consumed with learning about the latest calming techniques. Why am I so quick to look outside the blessing of peace that God has placed right in front of me? Has He not given me the tools I need to grow and thrive as a mama? Please tell me I’m not alone here!

The wonderful news is that there are many Bible verses about worry and stress that moms can use to experience calm and rest in Yahweh. We simply need to meditate on and hide these precious Words in our hearts. Memorizing Scripture prepares our hearts before we are blindsided with mom anxiety. In addition, tucking His Word deep in the nooks and crannies of our hearts allows us to quickly rebuke the enemy’s attacks with the Truth that sets us free.

Anxiety Calming Scriptures for Moms

So what is a good Bible verse for anxiety? How can you overcome mom worry? Let’s get right into just a few of the many Scriptures from God’s Word that will help you feel calmer as you rest in His Truth.

Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. –Philippians 4:6-7

These verses are probably some of the most popular when it comes to dealing with anxiety and worry. One of my favorite things about these verses is that Yahweh gives us instructions on how to overcome anxiety. He doesn’t simply tell us to “not be anxious and get over it.” However, He does tell us to “not be anxious,” but He doesn’t leave us hanging there. He goes on to tell us to pray, be thankful, and let our requests be made known to Him. I don’t know about you, but I find it very difficult to wallow in stress and worry when I’m focused on prayer, gratitude, and communion with God.

How can you put these disciplines into practice? As mamas, we know how busy we are. That’s why we must capitalize on the pockets of time we do have. Steal away for a few minutes and spend time alone with God. Thank Him for the blessings in your life and use a gratitude journal if that is something that helps you focus. Spend time in quiet worship and your anxiety is sure to melt away in His presence.

What is a Psalm for Mothers?

I don’t know about you, but I find myself turning to the Psalms over and over again for comfort and encouragement. This beautiful collection of Scriptures is like an old familiar friend. While there are many Psalms appropriate for anxious mamas, there are a few in particular that are like balm to an anxious heart.

For You formed my inward parts; You covered me in my mother’s womb. I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; marvelous are Your works, and that my soul knows very well. My frame was not hidden from You when I was made in secret and skillfully wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed. And in Your book they all were written, the days fashioned before me when as yet there were none of them. — Psalm 139:13-16

On the surface, these beautiful verses do not seem to deal with anxiety and worry. However, these Scriptures are like a warm, comforting hug from our Creator. He formed us and knows us. Everything about us is no secret to Him–even our anxious thoughts.  We have a million reasons to praise and worship Him, just one of those being that He made us fearfully and wonderfully. And not only can we bask in His glory because of how He formed us, but also because of how He formed our children. We can trust Him because, if we understand that He is in control of the tiniest detail regarding how we were formed, He is certainly in control when it comes to our anxious thoughts.

Bible Verses for Stressed Moms: Bible Verses About Worry and Stress

One of my favorite Bible verses about worry and stress for moms is 2 Timothy 1:7:

For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.

This verse is near and dear to my heart for a few reasons. First, it is short and sweet, which makes it perfect for memorization. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve whipped this verse out of my back pocket when fear and anxiety reared their ugly heads. Next, this verse helps you recognize and acknowledge exactly where fear and anxiety come from. They cannot come from God because He clearly states in His Word that He has not given us a spirit of fear. We know that anxiety is birthed out of fear. That gives us a clue that the enemy is using fear against us. In some cases, the enemy doesn’t even need to attack our minds as we have become so engulfed in our anxiety that it has become part of our identity. Ouch.

I challenge you to ask God to reveal to you whether you live in a constant state of fear and anxiety. Ask Him to deliver you from it. Be intentional about Scripture memorization that fights anxiety–specifically, 2 Timothy 1:7. Remove yourself from any sort of external influence that feeds your anxiety, such as social media, the news, and negative people. Take these simple steps and you will be blessed because of them.

What is an Encouraging Bible Verse for Moms?

There are so many times when my mama heart is hungry for encouragement. While being a mother is one of the sweetest blessings I’ve ever experienced, there are days when a little encouragement goes a long way. That’s why I’m so grateful for God’s Word. It is full of encouragement to help spur me on along this journey known as motherhood. I could share a hundred and one Bible verses about worry and stress for moms, but this blog post would be a mile long. So for simplicity’s sake, I’ll just share one of my favorite encouraging Bible verses for moms below:

But He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore, I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong. — 2 Corinthians 12:9-10

Bible Verses About Worry and Stress for Moms

When I became a mother I also became keenly aware of my weaknesses. Sleep deprivation and having no idea what you’re doing has a way of doing that, doesn’t it? As a new mom, I felt completely inadequate to walk in this new calling that Yaheweh had so richly blessed me with. But in the depths of my shortcomings, He gently placed these familiar verses before me and they suddenly took on new meaning in the context of motherhood.

I’ve always been amazed by the strength of Paul, the writer of these verses. He gloried in his weaknesses, persecutions, and hardships because he understood that each trial was yet another opportunity for Yahweh’s power to be made perfect. I pray that I can grow up one day and have even just a sliver of the faith that Paul had. Motherhood offers daily opportunities for His power to be made perfect in our weakness. These verses challenge me to embrace them instead of fighting against them. May the Father be glorified on my hard days and may I always come to Him in gratitude for the strength He provides me to face every day. No matter how difficult, every day and every moment is a gift.

You can print them onto cardstock, but good ole computer paper works in a pinch. The point is to get these Scriptures into your heart and mind.

Overcome Mom Anxiety by Resting in Him

In addition to memorizing Bible verses for stress and worry, one of the best ways to experience calm as a mom is to rest in God. But what does that mean? Doesn’t rest as a mom seem like some elusive goal to be chased? I completely understand. Some days it feels like all I can do to put one foot in front of the other. But at the end of the day, I am always in awe of how God strengthens me to do this motherhood thing.

Resting in God doesn’t always look like eating bonbons while laying in a hammock on a beach somewhere. But if that happened to be my situation I would not be mad about it. In reality, resting in God can look like intentional daily gratitude. It can look like listening to worship music or an edifying podcast in the pockets of time throughout your day. If we wait for hours to spend with Him to appear out of thin air, we will be waiting forever. Ask Yahweh to come to you when you’re up to your elbows in dirty diapers and homeschool math problems. He will. If you’d like more practical ideas on how to find spiritual rest as a mom, be sure to check out my blog post “Can a Mom Practice Sabbath Rest?”

A Prayer for Mom Anxiety

Mama, as I button up this blog post I am pausing to say a prayer over each of you who will read these words. Those of you who desperately need Yahweh’s peace to settle over your hearts and minds. He sees you and He wants to comfort you.

Father, I ask that you would send your supernatural comfort directly to the hearts of each mama who longs to feel your peace. Embrace each of your daughters with the shelter of Your wings. Be their strength in their daily challenges and may You be glorified as Your power is made perfect in their weaknesses. Surely You are their refuge and fortress. May fear, anxiety, worry, and stress fall to the wayside and be replaced with unspeakable joy. Amen.
